Astronomers Find Hundreds of Strange Filaments in Galactic Core

Astronomers conducting a survey of the Milky Way have stumbled upon a remarkable find in the galactic core. They have discovered hundreds of mysterious cosmic threads that appear to converge towards the supermassive black hole at the heart of our galaxy. These strange filaments, stretching between five to 10 light years through space, resemble the dots and dashes of Morse code on a massive scale. The newfound filaments emanate from the galactic center, 25,000 light years away from Earth, spreading out like fragmented spokes on an enormous wheel.

Horizontal Structures, 10 Light Years Long, Resemble Morse Code on Vast Scale

The cosmic threads, which have been captured by the incredibly sensitive MeerKAT radio telescope in South Africa, exhibit intriguing characteristics. Measuring five to 10 light years in length, these horizontal structures have a striking resemblance to Morse code patterns on a grand scale. The threads, akin to fragmented spokes, originate from the core of the Milky Way and extend outward into space. Their peculiar formation has left astronomers astounded and eager to decipher their significance.

Threads Provide Insights into Activity of Milky Way's Supermassive Black Hole

The discovery of these enigmatic cosmic threads has sparked excitement among astronomers. Farhad Yusef-Zadeh, an astronomer at Northwestern University, describes his astonishment upon uncovering the structures during a survey of the galactic core. Yusef-Zadeh remarks that all the threads seem to trace back to the black hole, offering valuable insights into its activity. These cosmic threads are not only visually intriguing but may hold the key to understanding the behavior and influence of the supermassive black hole at the center of our galaxy.

Scientists Uncover Clues about Galactic Spin and Accretion Disc Formation

The newfound horizontal filaments have caught researchers off guard, as their existence went largely unnoticed in previous studies. The emphasis had primarily been on studying the larger, vertical filaments surrounding the Milky Way's black hole. However, the MeerKAT telescope's extended survey of the galactic core allowed scientists to remove background noise and filter the images, bringing the shorter, horizontal threads into focus.

According to Yusef-Zadeh, the shorter threads likely formed through a different process compared to their larger vertical counterparts. He suggests that around six million years ago, a powerful outburst of material from the black hole collided with surrounding stars and gas clouds. This collision gave rise to streaks of hot plasma that now point back towards the black hole. The interaction between the outflow from the black hole and the objects it encounters distorts their shape and propels them in the same direction, akin to blowing paint across a canvas with a hairdryer.

Studying these cosmic threads presents a unique opportunity for astronomers to unravel the mysteries of the Milky Way's central black hole. Insights into the black hole's spin and the formation of the accretion disc, a swirling disk of infalling material surrounding it, can be gleaned from these structures. As scientists continue to explore and analyze these cosmic threads, the discovery promises to unlock a wealth of knowledge about our galaxy's enigmatic core.

In the words of Yusef-Zadeh, Our galaxy is rich in lots of structures that we can't explain. There's still a lot to be learned." The cosmic threads offer a fascinating glimpse into the intricate workings of the Milky Way and serve as a testament to the immense mysteries that await discovery in the vastness of space.
